    Characterization and evaluation of Bacillus isolates for their potential plant growth and biocontrol activities against tomato bacterial wilt

    About 200 Bacillus isolates were isolated from tomato and potato rhizosphere and examined for their antagonistic activities against Ralstonia solanacearum T-91, the causal agent of tomato bacterial wilt (TBW), in vitro and in vivo. Four strains, AM1, D16, D29 and H8, have shown high potential of antagonistic activity against the pathogen in laboratory and greenhouse experiments. In greenhouse, 81.1 to 89.0% reduction of disease incidence of TBW was recorded in treated tomato plants with 4 isolates, which also significantly (p > 0.05) increased plant height by 22.7 to 43.7% and dry weight by 47.93 to 91.55% compared with non-treated control. 16SrRNA gene sequence, the biochemical and physiological tests and fatty acid methyl esters analysis assigned strains AM1 and D29 as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, while strains D16 and H8 as Bacillus subtilis and B. methylotrophicus, respectively. In addition, the 4 strains showed ability to inhibit growth of the three soil-borne fungi, produce indole-3- acetic acid, siderophores and also with exception of strain D16, the other 3 strains were capable of solubilizing phosphate. Therefore, these results suggest that out of 200 isolates, Bacillus stains AM1, D16, D29 and H8 support good antagonistic activity and could be applied as biocontrol agents against TBW under greenhouse conditions beside their potential to promote tomato plants growth.Key words: Tomato, Ralstonia solanacearum, Bacillus spp, biological control, plant growth promotion activitie

    Robust Beamforming with Pilot Reuse Scheduling in a Heterogeneous Cloud Radio Access Network

    © 1967-2012 IEEE. This paper considers a downlink ultradense heterogeneous cloud radio access network, which guarantees seamless coverage and can provide high date rates. In order to reduce channel state information (CSI) feedback overhead, incomplete intercluster CSI is considered, i.e., each remote radio head or macro base station only measures the CSI from user equipments (UEs) in its serving cluster. To reduce pilot consumption, pilot reuse among UEs is assumed, resulting in imperfect intracluster CSI. A two-stage optimization problem is then formulated. In the first stage, a pilot scheduling algorithm is proposed to minimize the sum mean square error (MSE) of all channel estimates. Specifically, the minimum number of required pilots along with a feasible pilot allocation solution are first determined by applying the Dsatur algorithm, and adjustments based on the defined level of pilot contamination are then carried out for further improvement. Based on the pilot allocation result obtained in the first stage, the second stage aims at maximizing the sum spectral efficiency (SE) of the network by optimizing the beam vectors. Due to incomplete intercluster CSI and imperfect intracluster CSI, an explicit expression of each UE's achievable rate is unavailable. Hence, a lower bound on the achievable rate is derived based on Jensen's inequality, and an alternative robust transmission design algorithm along with its distributed realization are then proposed to maximize the derived tight lower bound. Simulation results show that compared with the existing algorithms, the system performance can be greatly improved by the proposed algorithms in terms of both sum MSE and sum SE

    Spina bifida-predisposing heterozygous mutations in Planar Cell Polarity genes and Zic2 reduce bone mass in young mice

    Fractures are a common comorbidity in children with the neural tube defect (NTD) spina bifida. Mutations in the Wnt/planar cell polarity (PCP) pathway contribute to NTDs in humans and mice, but whether this pathway independently determines bone mass is poorly understood. Here, we first confirmed that core Wnt/PCP components are expressed in osteoblasts and osteoclasts in vitro. In vivo, we performed detailed µCT comparisons of bone structure in tibiae from young male mice heterozygous for NTD-associated mutations versus WT littermates. PCP signalling disruption caused by Vangl2 (Vangl2Lp/+) or Celsr1 (Celsr1Crsh/+) mutations significantly reduced trabecular bone mass and distal tibial cortical thickness. NTD-associated mutations in non-PCP transcription factors were also investigated. Pax3 mutation (Pax3Sp2H/+) had minimal effects on bone mass. Zic2 mutation (Zic2Ku/+) significantly altered the position of the tibia/fibula junction and diminished cortical bone in the proximal tibia. Beyond these genes, we bioinformatically documented the known extent of shared genetic networks between NTDs and bone properties. 46 genes involved in neural tube closure are annotated with bone-related ontologies. These findings document shared genetic networks between spina bifida risk and bone structure, including PCP components and Zic2. Genetic variants which predispose to spina bifida may therefore independently diminish bone mass

    Investigation of the on-axis atom number density in the supersonic gas jet under high gas backing pressure by simulation

    The supersonic gas jets from conical nozzles are simulated using 2D model. The on-axis atom number density in gas jet is investigated in detail by comparing the simulated densities with the idealized densities of straight streamline model in scaling laws. It is found that the density is generally lower than the idealized one and the deviation between them is mainly dependent on the opening angle of conical nozzle, the nozzle length and the gas backing pressure. The density deviation is then used to discuss the deviation of the equivalent diameter of a conical nozzle from the idealized deq in scaling laws. The investigation on the lateral expansion of gas jet indicates the lateral expansion could be responsible for the behavior of the density deviation. These results could be useful for the estimation of cluster size and the understanding of experimental results in laser-cluster interaction experiments. (C) 2015 Author(s).     Roles of Coactivators in Hypoxic Induction of the Erythropoietin Gene

    Hypoxia-inducible expression of the erythropoietin (EPO) gene is mediated principally by hypoxia-inducible factor 2alpha (HIF-2alpha) in Hep3B cells under physiologic conditions. How/whether p300/CBP and the members of p160 coactivator family potentiate hypoxic induction of endogenous EPO and other HIF-2alpha and hypoxia-inducible factor 1alpha (HIF-1alpha) target genes remains unclear.We demonstrate, using chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) analysis, that the histone acetyl transferase (HAT) coactivators p300, SRC-1 and SRC-3 are recruited to the 3' enhancer of the EPO gene upon hypoxic stimulation, and that each associates with the enhancer in a periodic fashion. Hypoxia induced acetylation of the EPO gene 5' promoter at histone 4 and lysine 23 of histone 3. Knocking down SRC-3, but not SRC-1 or SRC-2, using short interfering RNAs (siRNAs), reduced EPO transcriptional activity. Knocking down p300 resulted in dramatic down-regulation of hypoxic stimulation of EPO gene transcription, negated recruitment of RNA polymerase II to the gene's promoter, and eliminated hypoxia-stimulated acetylation at the promoter and recruitments of SRC-1 and SRC-3 to the enhancer. The inhibitory effects of knocking down p300 and the chromatin remodeling coactivator, Brm/Brg-1, on EPO transcription were additive, suggesting that p300 and Brm/Brg-1 act independently. p300 was also required for hypoxia induced transcription of the HIF-1alpha target gene, VEGF, but was dispensable for induction of two other HIF-1alpha target genes, PGK and LDHA. Knocking down CBP, a homolog of p300, augmented hypoxic induction of VEGF, LDHA and PGK. Different HIF target genes also exhibited different requirements for members of the p160 coactivator family.p300 plays a central coactivator role in hypoxic induction of EPO. The coactivators exhibit different specificities for different HIF target genes and each can behave differently in transcriptional regulation of different target genes mediated by the same transcription factor

    Robust transmission design for multicell D2D underlaid cellular networks

    This paper investigates the robust transmission design (RTD) of a multicell device-to-device (D2D) underlaid cellular network with imperfect channel state information (CSI). The bounded model is adopted to characterize the CSI impairment and the aim is to maximize the worst-case sum rate of the system. To protect cellular communications, it is assumed that the interference from all D2D transmitters to each base station (BS) is power-limited. It is first shown that the worst-case signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of each D2D link can be obtained directly, while that of cellular links cannot be similarly found since the channel estimation error vectors of cellular links are coupled in the SINR expressions. To solve the nonconvex problem, the objective function of the original problem is replaced with its lower bound, and the resulted problem is decomposed into multiple semidefinite programming (SDP) subproblems, which are convex and have computationally efficient solutions. An iterative RTD algorithm is then proposed to obtain a suboptimal solution. Simulation results show that D2D communication can significantly increase the performance of the conventional cellular systems while causing tolerable interference to cellular users. In addition, the proposed RTD algorithm outperforms the conventional nonrobust transmission design greatly in terms of network spectral efficiency

    Low density parity check (LDPC) codes, LT codes and digital fountain techniques have received significant attention from both academics and industry in the past few years. By employing the underlying ideas of efficient Belief Propagation (BP) decoding process (also called iterative message passing decoding process) on binary erasure channels (BEC) in LDPC codes, Wang has recently introduced the concept of array BP-XOR codes and showed the necessary and sufficient conditions for MDS [k + 2,k] and [n,2] array BP-XOR codes. In this paper, we analyze the encoding symbol degree requirements for array BP-XOR codes and present new necessary conditions for array BP-XOR codes. These new necessary conditions are used as a guideline for constructing several array BP-XOR codes and for presenting a complete characterization (necessary and sufficient conditions) of degree two array BP-XOR codes and for designing new edge-colored graphs. Meanwhile, these new necessary conditions are used to show that the codes by Feng, Deng, Bao, and Shen in IEEE Transactions on Computers are incorrect

    Oral microbiota and vitamin D impact on oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinogenesis: a narrative literature review

    An emerging body of research is revealing the microbiota pivotal involvement in determining the health or disease state of several human niches, and that of vitamin D also in extra-skeletal regions. Nevertheless, much of the oral microbiota and vitamin D reciprocal impact in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinogenesis (OPSCC) is still mostly unknown. On this premise, starting from an in-depth scientific bibliographic analysis, this narrative literature review aims to show a detailed view of the state of the art on their contribution in the pathogenesis of this cancer type. Significant differences in the oral microbiota species quantity and quality have been detected in OPSCC affected patients; in particular, mainly high-risk human papillomaviruses (HR-HPVs), Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida spp. seem to be highly represented. Vitamin D prevents and fights infections promoted by the above identified pathogens, thus confirming its homeostatic function on the microbiota balance. However, its antimicrobial and antitumoral actions, well-described for the gut, have not been fully documented for the oropharynx yet. Deeper investigations of the mechanisms that link vitamin D levels, oral microbial diversity and inflammatory processes will lead to a better definition of OPSCC risk factors for the optimization of specific prevention and treatment strategies

The analytic solution of the coupling equation, which involves the results from the previous macroscopic theory of optical activity, describing the propagation of monochromatic light in arbitrary polarization state traveling in any direction in an optical active crystal belonging to any point group, is given in this paper. Finally, as an application of this theory, the influence of the wave-vector mismatch on the optical rotation in quartz crystal is studied in detail by analyzing the polarization state of the output light
